Item Description

Cimolite is an ambiguously named variety of "clay" from Cimolo, Greece, today known as Kimolos Island. An ancient mineral, it was mentioned by Theophrastos and Pliny. It is a very lightweight clay. Extremely rare on the market. Not pretty to look at, but definitely historical. Ex William Vaux and Philadelphia Academy Collections.
