Item Description
This is a wonderful and classic Chrysocolla specimen from the famous Ray Mine in Arizona. The beautiful bright blue Chrysocolla is replacing what was once either Azurite or Gypsum (depending upon whom you ask). The display side of this specimen is eye-catching showing excellent crystal form with sharp, well-preserved crystal faces from the original Azurite/Gypsum which are sitting are richer colored blue-green Chrysocolla, with dark black/brown oxide matrix. For a long time these specimens were labeled as Chrysocolla after Azurite, but nobody has been able to prove this, so some have speculated that they could be replacing Gypsum, which is also monoclinic in habit like Azurite. You don't see a lot of these pieces on the market, and they are certainly iconic in the pseudomorph world, but they are also excellent secondary ore specimens. It's rare to find such showy and displayable MATRIX examples of this material, and this one really stands out for its color, form and overall quality.
The piece came to George by way of John White, the former curator at the Smithsonian.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 504 AZ.5; 4883. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
