Item Description

A wonderful, classic example of these famous old pseudomorphs of Chrysocolla replacing Azurite or Gypsum from the famous Ray Mine in Arizona. It will note that these specimens are traditionally labeled as Chrysocolla after Azurite, but new evidence leads many to think they could be replacing Gypsum, which is also monoclinic in habit like Azurite. This piece features several attractive, thin, prismatic, crystals which were replaced by rich green Chrysocolla, perfectly preserving their original form with distinct "chisel"-shaped terminations. The main crystals are undamaged, and the only roughness I can find is on one of the smaller secondary pseudomorphs on the side of the piece. You don't see a lot of these pieces on the market, and they are highly sought after by those who collect pseudomorphs, secondary ore specimens or minerals from Arizona. Valued $3,500.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 504 AZ.5; 4883. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
