Item Description
A rare large combination plate from this obscure specimen - gemstone mine (chrysoberyl) in pegmatite. Started and initially closed in the 1870's (MINDAT). The sculptural large plate hosts a well-placed, 1.4 cm section of a glassy, translucent, cyclically-twinned, yellow-green, chrysoberyl crystal. Rare, lustrous and translucent, cranberry-red almandine garnet crystals and sections to 1.0 cm are scattered on both sides of the microcline and quartz pegmatie matrix. An outstanding and rare combination from this locale from the Bob Trimingham Collection. Purchased from David Garske in 1980 and formerly in the Gunnar Bjareby Collection of Boston, according to Bob's label (though all older original labels are missing, his own labels document the history very nicely). Value to the locality or species collector?? I can only say that I have seen a VERY few similar, but loose chrysoberyls from here out of the old Harvard collection, sell for hundreds of dollars. This matrix combination piece is considerably more uncommon.
