Known as “greenstone” or “green star stone,” this is a rich green, fat egg-shaped, unfractured cab of top quality for the material. Perfect size and shape for setting in jewelry. Comes with handwritten letter of provenance from the lapidary who shaped and polished this gem (name unknown) which states the following: A form of pumpellyite that has stellate masses within. These masses reflect light, givign them chatoyancy. The chatoyancy can be compounded to a turtle skin pattern that is glowing or catseye, which is enhanced by light....it's how these masses come together that determines the chatoyance effect and luster. This stone was found (field-collected) at the old Central Mine, where they are rare and of generally low quality, making this a standout. 8.4 carats.
