Item Description

An incredibly hard to find Chamosite specimen from the Atlantic City Iron Mine in Wyoming which produced over 80 million tons of Magnetite (iron) ore. Specimens from this locality are incredibly hard to find on the market, and this is the ONLY piece we've ever had to offer in the auctions. Chamosite is a member of the Chlorite group, and the iron analogue of Clinochlore. Good crystallized specimens are not terribly common, especially from a locality like this in nearly a full cabinet sized example. This piece hosts many fine quality hexagonal "rose"-esque or "book"-like groups of Chamosite measuring up to 9 mm across, showing a deep grey black hue, on matrix. Most of the crystals are in very good condition, and they look very nice up close. If you collect minerals of Wyoming or oddball locality pieces, this is something that you're not likely to find anywhere else on the market, so don't miss out.
From the collection of William ("Bill") (1927-2006) and Anne (1928-2021) Cook of Cleveland, Ohio (#14,026). This husband and wife duo were actively involved in the mineral world for many decades. Bill was a PhD geologist, and Anne was a mathematician, and they both were very serious mineral collectors. Bill served for many years as adjunct curator of mineralogy at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and Anne was inducted into the Micromounters' Hall of Fame on October 12, 2019. Both Bill and Anne, at various times, served as president both of the Mineralogical Society of Cleveland and of the Micromineral Society of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. The rare barium lithium beryllium phosphate Wilancookite was named in their honor in 2015.
