Item Description

Chalcostibite is a rare sulfosalt name for its chemistry (Chalco = Copper, Stib = Antimony) first discovered in the 1830s at the Graf Jost-Christian Mine in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Some of the finest examples of the species have been found at the famed Boldut Mine in Romania and this piece is a great example of said material featuring beautiful "rose"-shaped groups composed of thin metallic grey-black blades, on Quartz matrix. The largest Chalcostibite group measures about 3 mm across. Some of the crystals have a slight bluish iridescence on the surface for a nice touch. Beautiful material up close, and we've included some macro photos to better show the quality of the crystals.
From the collection of Vasco Trancoso, a medical doctor and prominent mineral collector from near Lisbon, Portugal (https://www.mindat.org/user-11954.html). He assembled his mineral collection over the course of 60 years, and built a fine worldwide display collection that we recently purchased. This piece is pictured on mindat.org at https://www.mindat.org/photo-203364.html
