Chalcophanite (rare and fine) (ex Zigras Collection)

Item Description

Here we have a fantastic showy cabinet sized display specimen of Chalcophanite from Sterling Hill. While most people label these specimens as coming from the type locality, it should be noted that the specifically the Passaic Pit is regarded as the type locality for this rare zinc manganese oxide. Most specimens of Chalcophanite feature relatively small patches of crystals, sometimes hidden in vugs, but this piece is a spectacular and rather aesthetic specimen that is LOADED with almost stalactitic, "fingers" comprising micro crystals of black Chalcophanite forming tight "rosettes". Underneath the specimen there is a thin layer of oxidation. The piece is in great condition with only a few bruises on the display side, but the most significant aspect to me is the brilliant sparkling luster. A lot of Chalcophanites from Sterling Hill can be dull and almost gray in color, but this piece is a rich blue hue and the luster is highly reflective. An important, large and eye-catching example of this well-known species from Sterling Hill. From the collection of James Zigras. We value this one HIGHLY for its size and quality, as one would be hard-pressed to find another piece like in today's market.
