Item Description

An impressive 6.0 x 3.5 cm area is festooned with sharp, lustrous, dark gray chalcocite crystals on this sculptural, rich old ore specimen from the well-known Cole Mine at famed Bisbee. The rest of the piece is covered with scintillating tiny brassy pyrite crystals and there is patch of peacock-blue iridescent bornite on one end, as a bonus. Hefty rich ore at 638 grams or 1.4 pounds mass. Chalcocite was a widely distributed and important ore mineral at Bisbee. The Cole Mine produced some of the finest examples of the species from Bisbee, but fine and rich specimens, such as this are uncommon. See the 1981 Mineralogical Record Arizona Special Issue III, Vol. 12, No. 5.
