Item Description

Chalcocite is a RARE and HIGHLY DESIRABLE accessory species from the famous Trap Rock basalt quarries of New Jersey. Undoubtedly the finest examples come from this famous quarry, that was excavated on top of the old Chimney Rock Copper Mine and has been known for its copper minerals for many years. Most of the copper minerals are found in the Passaic Formation redbed sediments immediately beneath the basalt (MINDAT). This is remarkable, significant and very rich specimen is from a small find in the mid-1990s. Intergrown, mostly crystallized, striated, lustrous metallic-gray crystals cover the mudstone matrix. The impressive crystals reach over 3.0 cm and the green chrysocolla on the mudstone and chalcocite are super accents. Crystallized specimens of this of this quality and richness are VERY RARE. This SUPERB chalcocite is from the Dr. Ed David Collection, who passed away in February, 2017. Ed was Science Advisor to President Nixon and assembled several world-class mineral collections. Valued at $2500 years ago in a trade with him, and worth it. Try to find another in this size, richness and combination quality!
