Item Description

The Upper New Street Quarry in Paterson, New Jersey is one of the great trap rock localities in the state. This historic quarry dates back to the 1890s, and produced some iconic minerals specimens over the years. This piece is a lovely miniature sized example of a species that is rarely seen with crystals this color. The piece hosts several lustrous, sharp, pseudo-rhombic (triclinic) crystals of Chabazite (presumably Chabazite-Ca) with a remarkably rare and incredibly beautiful rich brick red color measuring up to 1.2 cm are sitting on Calcite and basalt matrix. There are a lot of Chabazite localities around the world, but you rarely see crystals with such a saturated and intense color like this. Minor roughness can be seen, so the piece is not completely pristine, but it's still a good representative example of this uncommon material. If you're a zeolite collector, a NJ mineral collector, or if you're just a fan of good quality specimens of uncommon minerals, don't miss out on this beauty.
From the collection of Richard ("Rich") A. Kosnar (1946-2007), the well-known mineral dealer and collector from Colorado, who was originally born and raised in New Jersey and cut his teeth collecting in the various trap rock quarries in the northern part of the state.
