Item Description

The Prospect Park Quarry is one of the most well-known localities in New Jersey. In its lifetime, it produced some of the most iconic trap rock specimens from any quarry in the Watchung Mountains. This piece is a seldom seen Chabazite (presumably Chabazite-Ca) featuring several very sharp, highly lustrous, pinkish-brown colored, pseudo-rhombic (the crystals are actually triclinic) crystals measuring up to 1.3 cm associated with sparkling colorless crystals of Calcite and pale green gemmy Datolite in an open vug of basalt. It's hard to illustrate the quality of the Chabazites, but they're incredibly lustrous (almost "wet" looking") and if you look very closely, you'll see beautifully tiny built up faces (sometimes referred to as "hillocks") on the surface. No damage that I can see, and just excellent for what it is. Prospect Park no longer exists, so get these pieces while you can, because very little will be available on the market going forward. From the collection of Gerry Morvell.
