Item Description

Fascinating, highly unusual and rare old-time small cabinet combination from the famous and long extinct Wheatley Mines of Pennsylvania. The prominent, curved surface vug is fully covered with dark gray to black Cerussite crystals, to 5 mm, with occluded (absorbed) Galena. An opposite surface has major portions covered with nubby, green, botryoidal Pyromorphite. Additionally, minor portions of the piece host white Cerussite crystals, to 5 mm. The mines started in 1851 and were closed by the late 1860s. They were briefly reopened from 1917 to 1920. See the 1989 Mineralogical Record article in Vol. 20, No. 5. The piece probably dates to the 1800s active mining era. Formerly in the Harold Buckelew, Richard Hauck and Jim Chenard collections. Ex George Loud Collection No. 6114, a well-known Washington, DC and South Carolina mineral collector. He acquired the specimen from Jim Chenard in 2001. See: https://mineralogicalrecord.com/biographies_labels/george-loud for more information on George. We recently acquired most of his impressive over 9000 piece collection. Rare style Cerussite with occluded Galena, Pyromorphite and Cerussite from Wheatley.
