Item Description
An exceptional and sculptural celestine specimen from the Cretaceous-aged Glenrose Limestone of Lampasas County in the Texas Hill Country and on the north edge of the Llano Uplift. Celestine and calcite are the only two species known from the county (MINDAT). This striking three crystal cluster is dominated by the pristine, fabulous, 6.6 x 4.0 x 0.8 cm, very glassy, lustrous, transparent to translucent tabular crystal "sail" with two sharp beveled edges and a striking jagged edge. The sharp secondary terminated crystal is 6.3 cm long and the third terminated crystal is 3.5 cm long. This is simply an outstanding RARE 360-degree celestine from the county. Historically most celestine specimens from the county have been the blue blocky varietal, similar to famous Michigan celestines. Celestine specimens predominate from the county, BUT not of this quality. Texas is known as mostly a mineral wasteland, but this is a extraordinary exception from the Joe Lobell Collection, a well-known Oklahoma and Texas field collector.
