Item Description
A rarely seen and fine quality matrix display specimen of Celestine from the Calico Hills near Yermo, California. These specimens come from the old borate pits in the area, though no specific locality was assigned to this piece. I will say it's one of the best examples I've seen as the featured crystal is notably sharp, lustrous, gemmy and well-formed with a classic "chisel-shaped" termination. It measures 1.5 cm, and is surrounded by other crystals and massive sections of Celestine, with a bit of attached matrix. The color is a very soft silvery-blue shade. The main crystal is undamaged, but the surrounding Celestine is rough in areas, so the piece is not completely pristine. A very cool old-time piece that would make a great addition to a California mineral collection.
From the collection of Robert (Bob) Reynolds who passed in August of 2020. The piece is also accompanied by a label from the collection of Al Ordway. Bob was a well-known fossil and mineral expert and former Curator of Earth Sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum in California. The rare phyllomanganate-chromate species Reynoldsite was named in his honor in 2011.
