Item Description
Meckley's Quarry in Mandata, Pennsylvania has produced some of the most iconic Celestine specimens from any locality in the state. This limestone quarry dates back to 1936 and is still in operation today. This specimen is a beautiful cabinet sized display piece of these noted Celestines featuring several sharp, well-formed, translucent, beautiful grey-blue colored blocky crystals measuring up to 8 mm sitting on a sparkling layer of drusy Calcite on Tonoloway Limestone matrix. Very good quality, only minor roughness. It's hard to get your hands on a good cabinet sized piece of this material, but this one has the added bonus of displaying beautifully on its own without the aid of a base or clay. This specimen comes from the collection of our own Alex Venzke (#142.19), member of the leadership team of the Young Mineral Collectors group, a member of the mindat.org management team, a board member for the national Friends of Mineralogy organization, a board member for the Mineralogical Society of the District of Columbia, and co-founder and current Vice President of the Friends of Mineralogy Virginia Chapter.
