Item Description
This piece is labeled as coming from the Dzhezkazgan Mining District in Kazakhstan, but I can't find a listing for Cassiterite anywhere in Dzhezkazgan, so it might be from a more obscure locale in Kazakhstan. This is certainly a unique piece, not just for the rare locality, but the interesting an unusual habit for the Cassiterite crystals. They are elongated prisms, which isn't terribly common for Cassiterite, but they also have rarely seen tapered terminations. For the size, the piece has a bit of heft from the tin content of the Cassiterite. When backlit, some of the crystals show a golden hue with slight translucency, which is better than most Cassiterites you'll find, that are typically black and opaque. A beautiful specimen with a hard to find crystal morphology that would make a great addition to your collection. From the collection of Kurt Hefendehl (#556 RU), a well-known German collector all over Europe with worldwide contacts to dealers and collectors. He started collecting seriously at the age of 14 and his great and varied worldwide collection reached over 6000 pieces. He was very active mineralogically until shortly before his passing in 2020 at the age of 82. Considering his collection had a large number of pieces, it still had an unusually high standard of quality from most worldwide localities. He particularly specialized in all classics as well as minerals of the Black Forest, where he spent much time collecting. His Black Forest and German subcollections went to his good friend Wolfgang Wendel. We at The Arkenstone have the privilege of offering the remainder of this great worldwide collection over the next two to three years through our various platforms. Priced at $2,400 in our inventory.
