Item Description

Bolivia, historically, has probably produced more tin than any other country in the world. The famous old (and still operating) tin mine at Viloco (sometimes called Araca) have produced some of the most magnificent Cassiterite specimens extant. It's amazing that the actual tin ore in this mine is truly world-class Cassiterite. This particular specimen is a very good sized, fine, sharp, highly lustrous, golden/black cyclic twinned crystal group. When backlit, you can see a bit of color internally, which is important to note because Viloco is essentially the ONLY mine in Bolivia to produce transparent Cassiterites, essentially all other mines in the entire country produce opaque black crystals. This is a very attractive piece, and based upon the size, it is one of the better ones for quality and luster size that I've seen in recent years. The piece is in great shape, and save a few minor "rubs" on the surface, it essentially damage free on the display side. It is still a very attractive association specimen from this historic locality, and were it perfect, would be valued at around $1,000 retail.
