Item Description
Cornwall is one of the most famous tin-producing districts in the history of mining. Some of the most classic old-time specimens of Cassiterite have come from this area. This particular piece is a rather unusual example as it is essentially a hefty (292.01 grams) section of crystallized tin ore! A central vug reveals several well-formed, sharp, lustrous, brown-black crystals measuring up to 1.2 cm, which are growing on partially massive / crystalline Cassiterite matrix. An unknown soft-sage green colored mineral (possibly Clinochlore?) can be seen on several sides, along with some dark greenish-brown colored prisms of what I believe to be Tourmaline. This odd association along with the unique form and nature of the piece make it a truly intriguing and one-of-a-kind Cassiterite that would make a fine addition to any Cornwall suite or a collection of worldwide Cassiterites. Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#6738). Kay was a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics. She nearly lived 100 years from April 1920 - March 2020.
