Carrollite on Calcite

Instantly regarded as the best of species when these new Carrollite specimens were first found in the late 1990's, this discovery has produced some of the largest, sharpest, and most impressive crystals of this rare copper cobalt nickel sulfide seen. This excellent small-cabinet piece has a Calcite matrix hosting a cluster of fine, beautifully modified Carrollite crystals. These are literally like mirrors! Measuring up to 2 cm on edge, the crystals have outstanding, mirror-like luster. So good, in fact, that even the slightest change in orientation brings about a definite change in background reflections, as you can see in the two photos. The dramatic aesthetics are magnified by the modified corners tight clusters of sharp, but subtle, striations. In addition to the rhombohedral Calcite matrix, there is a sprinkling of Chalcopyrite that adds a bit of visual spice. Better even, in person.
