Item Description

This is an incredibly hard to find specimen of the rare halide species Carnallite from the type locality in Germany! I think this is only the second specimen that we've ever seen from Stassfurt, and it's a wonderful example. This piece is a solid group of beautiful reddish-orange colored Carnallite, with no matrix. This piece has been stored in a zip-top bag as it can potentially dissolve if it's exposed to enough moisture. Now it is stable in most non-humid environments, as much as any hydrated mineral, so unless you live in a highly humid area, you don't have to worry about it. A very important and certainly impressive old-time specimen of a rare mineral species from the type locality. I have a hard time thinking of a fair market value of this one, but I would put it easily in the $500 range for what it is. From the collection of Chester ("Chet") S. Lemanski Jr. of Browns Mills, New Jersey (https://www.mindat.org/user-461.html). Chet was born 1947 in started collecting minerals circa 1957. He worked briefly as a drill runner at the famous Sterling Mine, in Ogdensburg, New Jersey and from 1987 to 1990 he helped convert the mine into a public access mining museum. He has held the role of treasurer, vice president and president of the Franklin-Ogdensburg Mineralogical Society (FOMS), and has been a board member and vice president of the Franklin Mineral Museum. The rare copper arsenate, Lemanskiite was named in his honor in 1999.
