Item Description

A very hard to find specimen from the old Bufa Mine in Mexico featuring a sharp, well-formed scalenohedron of Calcite measuring 7.8 cm long which is covered all over with sparkling golden colored "star"-shaped groups of Gypsum (Selenite) sitting a matrix of grey Quartz with minor associated metallic iridescent golden Chalcopyrite. The Calcite might appear to be opaque, but this is only on the exterior, as it's actually translucent underneath where it's contacted. The tip of the Calcite has a slight contact, but the piece is in really good shape overall and very aesthetic as you can see from the photos. Calcites from the Bufa Mine are uncommon enough, but I've NEVER see a piece like this with the beautiful Selenite overgrowths. If you're a Calcite collector or if you collect Mexican minerals, don't miss out on this one as it might be a one-of-a-kind since I've never seen another like, not only from this mine, but worldwide. Priced at $1,200 in the inventory. Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#2833). Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017).
