Calcite with Hematite inclusions (classic material)

The famed Egremont Calcites are some of the most iconic examples of the species ever found, not just from England or even Europe, but around the world. These distinctive and incredibly beautiful specimens have been known since the mid 1800s, and they are certainly not terribly common the market today. This piece is a fantastic full-sized cabinet featuring dozens of glassy, very gemmy, sharp, well-formed Calcite crystals on oxidized matrix. The Calcites have a very gentle reddish-pink hue due to minor Hematite inclusions, creating that classic effect seen in Calcites from the West Cumberland Iron Field. The largest Calcite measures 1.8 cm across. Most of the crystals are in fine condition, though I can see a few cleaves, so the piece is not completely pristine. Overall, it's still in excellent shape, and displays beautifully. It's hard to convey the beauty and quality from the video, but it's a really good example of these beautiful old classics. Dick is an avid collector of minerals, books, and mining memorabilia, along with being an accomplished author in the mineral world. Arguably, his greatest claim to fame is being the co-founder of the Sterling Hill Mining Museum in Ogdensburg, NJ. Dick purchased the land on which the Sterling Hill Mine resides in 1988, and the museum has been running strong since.
