Calcite with Chalcopyrite (ex Allen Heyl Collection)

Item Description

A fine Pea Ridge Calcite and Chalcopyrite association specimen. The intergrown, translucent scalenohedra are included with a bit of reddish-brown Hematite and some sparkling iridescent Chalcopyrite. This mine is generally considered to be outside of the Viburnum Trend, as it was an underground iron mine and not a lead-zinc mine. The mine closed in 2001. The piece is from the Allen V. Heyl Collection, a geologist from Colorado, for whom the species Aheylite was named.
