Calcite with Amethyst

Item Description

This is a gorgeous, showy and aesthetic display quality association specimen from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil featuring a "frosted" rhomb of Calcite measuring 8.1 cm at its widest dimension, which is beautifully set between almost "flower"-like groups of gentle purple colored, "stubby" Amethyst crystals, measuring up to 1.3 cm on each side. Then if you look closely, you'll see there is actually second later deposition of both Calcite and Quartz on the piece in the form of colorless, gemmy "dogtooth" Calcites and little colorless, prismatic hexagonal Quartz crystals. So you have two distinct generations of Calcite and Quartz on the piece, which both look notably different from one another. I love how the piece can be displayed from several angles, and I really can't find any major damage anywhere. I've seen quite a few pieces from this area over the years, but this one stands out as not only being unique, but also very aesthetic and dramatic to boot. From the collection of Kurt Hefendehl (#199 BR), a well-known German collector all over Europe with worldwide contacts to dealers and collectors. He started collecting seriously at the age of 14 and his great and varied worldwide collection reached over 6000 pieces. He was very active mineralogically until shortly before his passing in 2020 at the age of 82. Considering his collection had a large number of pieces, it still had an unusually high standard of quality from most worldwide localities. He particularly specialized in all classics as well as minerals of the Black Forest, where he spent much time collecting. His Black Forest and German subcollections went to his good friend Wolfgang Wendel.
