Item Description

A RARE style old-time calcite from the historic iron mines of Cumbria. A striking dense 360-degree forest of very sharp, translucent, calcite scalenohedrons is strikingly preferentially included or coated with hematite. They look like classic calcites with hematite from Santa Eulalia, Mexico! We have reviewed the over 400 calcite photos in the MINDAT Cumbria database, with very few pieces resembling it. It is probably from the famous Stank Mine. Complete all-around and in great shape for such an old-timer, certainly over 100 years old. The scattered bruised crystals in the interior and bit of noted periphery wear are certainly modest detractions to this very fine old-timeer. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 1046 and acquired from Sol Shale in the 1950s. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017). Modest pink fluorescence. Choice, excellent and rare style old Cumbria calcite.
