Item Description

The Camp Bird mine near Ouray, Colorado is one of the most classic of all the Colorado ore body localities. It is renowned for its superb chalcopyrite specimens, exhibiting some of the finest twins for the species extant. This striking and rare combination specimen of calcite with chalcopyrite (usually with quartz) features jagged, mountain peak clusters dogtooth calcite crystals with attractively nestled, sharp, splendent, brassy-gold colored twinned crystals of chalcopyrite. This is an outstanding and rare chalcopyrite on calcite from this most classic of San Juan localities and is a fine 360-degree piece. Very nearly pristine, with only the tip of the tallest calcite "peak" being gently cleaved. These specimens are impossible to obtain these days, and are regarded among Colorado collectors as some of the best from the state. From the 1960s or 70s production, as even the ore body and level are known. Ex Jaime Bird Collection.
