Calcite (twinned)

Item Description

Three generations of Calcites highlight this rich cluster from the well-known Potosi Mine in Mexico's Santa Eulalia District with unusual twinning features. Internally very gemmy with iron oxide-tinted zones (my initial thought seeing these was 'Copper in Calcite'), these complex crystals have a slightly silky luster that allows much light to pass through, but at the same time giving the crystals body and form. Ranging in size from mm-size up to 2.3 cm, many of the larger crystals are complex and twinned, with very pronounced re-entrants that make some of these Calcites look heart-shaped. This is a sculptural and aesthetic specimen that shows much better in person. Trantham, it was recently deaccessed from the Tim Sherburn collection as well.
