Item Description

While Calcite is by no means a rare mineral, it is incredibly difficult to get your hands on specimens from Monon, Indiana. This piece comes with a label from dealer Keith Williams that states it is from the Monon Stone Quarry (not to be confused with the Vulcan Materials Company Quarry - Monon Plant in the same area. This piece is a great quality, sharp, well-formed, lustrous, gemmy / translucent, attractive scalenohedral Calcite crystal, but if you look on the top / back portion, you'll see that it has formed a most interesting twin with another Calcite crystal. The color ranges from a rich honey-golden hue in the center to nearly colorless on the ends. The main Calcite is in good shape, though it is cleaved on the base, and has a small contacted area on the back of the upper portion of the crystal. If you collect worldwide Calcites or twinned crystals, do not pass this one up, as it would be quite difficult to get your hands on another one from this locality these days. Valued at $850 in the inventory.
