Calcite (superb old classic gem style) circa late 1800s

Bigrigg Calcites are world-famous, and great specimens like this are highly prized. This small cabinet piece has good balance across the matrix, and the clear crystals are in excellent condition. The prismatic Calcites are GEMMY and range up to 2.3 cm tall. Each crystal has flattened rhombohedral terminations, which cause each termination to have a fantastic, eye-catching set of striations. Gentle orange fluorescence graces each of the Calcites, adding even more to the aesthetics and quality of the piece. Classics of old English minerals, these were generally found in the mid to late 1800s, and absolutely remain classics to this day, with good ones rarely coming available. Previously in the Miller collection from the 1800’s, after which it went to James B. Cone and the Wadsworth Atheneaum, and then to the Loomis Chaffee School (this label style is known to have that history).
