Item Description

A striking 4.7 cm water-clear, doubly terminated, complex rhomb with striated faces is dramatically perched atop a large scalenohedron covered with fantastic, sparkly, dense second generation stepped-growth rhombs. The core of the scalenohedron is fainly amber, which imparts a very slight the straw tint to the piece. Complete all-around and nearly pristine, with only a small edge bruise to the rhomb atop, this is an excellent example of a classic American find - probably from the early 1970s. Sceptered calcite specimens from this old Upper Mississippi Valley Mining District Pb-Zn mining area are a US classic. Mining started in about 1847, with continuous production until 1979. The phantom in the large rhomb adds dramatic character to this fine piece and frnakly that IS what this locality was famous for, back in the day! Old piece from the Rob Lavinsky calcite collection, late 1980s or early 1990s acquisition - we loved these things in the Midwest!
