Item Description
Classic calcite birefringence on this RARE optical grade calcite cleavage from the famous extinct Pb-Zn mines at Balmat. Birefringence is formally defined as the double refraction of light in a transparent, molecularly ordered material, which is manifested by the existence of orientation-dependent differences in refractive index (https://www.microscopyu.com/techniques/polarized-light/principles-of-birefringence). Balmat is famed for classic sharp magnetite crystals and beautiful sphalerite crystals. Optical grade calcite of this quality is VERY RARE as a piece of mineral-related interest.
