Impressive, unusual style large 2-generation calcite from this obscure deposit in eastern San Diego County. Densely intergrown, lustrous, transparent to translucent, flattened gray rhombs are dramatically preferentially overgrown with a myriad of smaller white second generation rhombs. The striking large rhomb is 8.8 cm across. This sculptural piece is from the Hilton deposit, developed during World War II for optical grade (Iceland spar) calcite for the military (MINDAT). Mining ceased during the war, with some collecting afterward. Ex Bill Larson San Diego County Collection and long on display at his Pala International shop in Fallbrook. A choice, aesthetic large calcite from the uncommon locale. Crystals in good shape were ALWAYS rare. This is ridiculously good for what it is. These are simply not for sale at any price and we were fortunate to get this old collection of such treasures. When they are gone...they are gone~!
