Item Description

A great piece for any Calcite collector, as it is virtually impossible to get your hands on a specimen from Furubira. This piece features a pair of sharp, well-formed, translucent, white / colorless, prismatic scalenohedral crystals of Calcite measuring up to 5.0 cm long sitting beautifully atop the underlying black basalt matrix with a white layer of Chalcedony in between. Both crystals are in excellent condition as the only real damage is at the base where they detached from the pocket. The larger Calcite has a slightly irregular termination where it must have grown against additional host rock or possibly another Calcite, but it's not damaged. Looking closely, you can see hundreds of tiny modifying faces that run the length of the Calcites, giving them a textured appearance and real character. Great pink-red fluorescence under SW UV light too! A must have for any fan of Japanese minerals or worldwide Calcites! Valued at $700 for the quality and rare locale! From the worldwide collection of David Burgess (1951-2016). David was a prolific species collector from Newington, Connecticut, and the namesake for the extremely rare cobalt arsenate species Burgessite, which he discovered. The piece also comes with a classic hand-written label from Alfredo Petrov who has arguably the most distinctive labels in the mineral business.
