Item Description

A hard to find Calcite specimen from the Gastein Ravine Tunnel near the town of Lend in Austria. According to mindat.org this tunnel was cut in the early 20th century, so these pieces are presumably many decades old. This piece features notably sharp, well-formed, glassy scalenohedral crystals measuring up to 2.3 cm long, with a light golden-orange hue caused by iron oxide content, sitting on limestone matrix. The majority of the crystals are in very good condition, though minor imperfections can be seen up close. I love the distinct but gentle striations that can be seen on some of the larger Calcites. If you collect worldwide Calcites, this is a very attractive and fine quality example to add to your collection from an obscure locale. Valued at $600-$800. From the collection of Colin Manlove.
