Item Description

An impressive and incredibly hard to find Calcite specimen labeled as coming from Danyang-gun (?) = Danyang County in North Chungcheong Province (Chungcheonbukdo) in South Korea. It's the only Calcite specimen I can remember having to offer from the area, and certainly one of the VERY few Calcites from South Korea that we've had to offer, period. The piece is a showy cabinet sized display specimen filled with notably compressed rhombic crystals of a soft off-white hue (almost porcelain-esque) which measure up to 5.6 cm across, with no other associations and only a thin layer of matrix underneath that I can find. The piece is in amazingly good condition, with no major damage, only a few minor imperfections. A really cool locality specimen for any fan of worldwide Calcites or minerals of South Korea. You're not likely to see another like it on the market, so don't miss out. The piece originally came from Alfredo Petrov, and his hand-written label accompanies the piece, along with a thank you note / receipt written on his business card to Jack Halpern, who purchased the piece in 2018.
From the collection of Jack Halpern No. 4219 . Jack was born May 18, 1920 in Brooklyn, New York, but has been a long-time resident of San Francisco. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the world encompassing over 3,200 specimens with a specific emphasis on color, quality, and style/aesthetics, which is evident in every piece. He admired specimens of all sizes from thumbnails to large cabinets and the vast majority of them rank from fine to world-class in their quality.
Above all else, Jack is considered to be the greatest gentleman in the modern era of mineral collecting. He is beloved by all those who have met him, and he truly is one of the most iconic figures in the mineral world. We recently acquired Jack's collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality pieces for their collections. We are honored to have the opportunity to offer Jack's treasures to everyone on a regular basis in the auctions.
