Item Description
A sculptural cluster of variably-sized, parallel-growth, lustrous, translucent, trigonal calcite crystals with pinacoidal terminations is jauntily set on matrix on this showy and excellent old-timer from the ancient and historic mines at St Andreasberg. The prisms reach 3.5 cm on this artistic 360-degree piece. A few dinged prisms are certainly acceptable in the context of this quality old-timer. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 12751 and acquired from Scott Williams in the 1990s. Kay assembled an important suite of classics and rarities from this famed district. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record). See the Mineralogical Record St. Andreasberg Special Issue, May-June, 2017, Vol. 48, No. 3. The is piece undoubtedly dates to the 1800s, as the last mine closed in 1910. An excellent calcite from this famed locale. Pretty pink fluorescence.
