Item Description

VERY RARE and impressive large calcite plate from a most obscure roadcut along US Interstate I-15. Striking blocky, translucent, pristine gray calcite rhombs with satin lustre faces, to 2.8 cm, are very aesthetically scattered on the sculptural calcite and matrix plate. Kaolinite clay covers the matrix and parts of the calcite rhombs, adding striking contrast. The piece displays well from either direction. The roadcut is near a large extinct complex of former clay pits in Alberhill. Self-collected by Al Ordway in 1978. Ex Bob Reynolds Collection, a well-known fossil and mineral expert and former Curator of the San Bernardino County Museum. He passed away in 2020. A rare, perhaps UNIQUE large calcite from Alberhill. A MUST for the species or locality collector.
