Calcite on Dolomite

Item Description

When you think of minerals of Arkansas, one of the signature species are the classic pink Dolomites from Black Rock. These attractive specimens are not only iconic, but they are instantly recognizable around the world for their beautiful color and attractive crystal habit. This piece not only features these beautiful classic Dolomite crystals, but the main focus are a few excellent, very gemmy, light golden colored, scalenohedral crystals of Calcite measuring up to 3.1 cm, sitting beautifully atop the piece. The Dolomite crystals are, very sharp, highly lustrous, beautiful salmon pink colored slightly curved (almost "saddle-shaped") rhombs. A tiny bit of metallic Chalcopyrite can be seen on the piece for a nice touch. No major damage (outside of the periphery where it was removed from the pocket wall), and very eye-catching for its three dimensional appeal and excellent crystals.
From the collection of John Whatley, a well-known Georgia collector (1939-2022). John had many interests and hobbies, and favorite hobby was collecting rocks and minerals. He was a member of the Augusta and Aiken, SC Gem and Mineral Society. He also enjoyed collecting arrowheads and he co-authored the book, An Overview of Georgia Projectile Points and Select Cutting Tools. He was a member of the Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama Archaeology Societies and he also enjoyed volunteering in the Archaeology Department at SRS.
