Cavnic is one of the great historic mining districts of Europe, with records dating back to 1336. This is a striking, unusual and aesthetic calcite on calcite specimen. The sharp, visually impressive opposing scalenohedrons host 6 well-placed, knobby hemispheres of tiny calcite rhombs. Interestingly, the side with the balls has a tan overcoat of iron-oxides, while the backside is colorless. Cavnic produces an amazing variety of calcite forms and this is certainly an outstanding combination example. Ex Ed Bancroft Collection.
