Item Description

Calcite is a classic and highly desirable species from this ancient silver mining district. It is one of the world's great calcite localities. This is a sculptural 360-degree specimen of striking intergrown clusters of translucent, off-white, stacked, stepped-growth calcite rhombs with variable amounts of gray oxide tinting. Complete all-around this very fine old-timer is essentially pristine. The less tinted rhombs fluoresce pink. This classic piece hails from the the Sir Robert Ferguson Collection (1769-1840). We first helped bring this collection to market back in the late 1990s. He was a member of Parliament and the landed nobility from Fife, Scotland (he had stopped collecting by 1810 AS A RESULT OF A DIVORCE SETTLEMENT INVOLVING LORD ELGIN, OF THE MARBLES FAME!). A real and desirable antique!
