Item Description
A very aesthetic intergrown cluster of lustrous, translucent calcite scalenohedrons, probably from the famous Helgustadir Mine, source of "Iceland spar". Near Eskifjord town. "An occurrence of optical-grade calcite known since 1669. "Iceland spar" was mined in an organized way from 1855. Regular mining ended in 1925" (MINDAT). The crystals look doubly terminated, but are not. Considering the age of this excellent piece, the bit of edge wear is certainly acceptable. Classic, old-time material from the Herb Obodda Collection # 2119 and comes with an F. Krantz label, dating to after 1890.
