Item Description
Schneeberg is one of the great old mining districts in Germany dating back to the 1400s. The area was first exploited for silver and bismuth, along with cobalt, nickel and later uranium. This piece was labeled as only coming from Schneeberg, with no specific mine given. It features a coverage of fine quality, very sharp, lustrous, gemmy, colorless, thick, tabular / compressed scalenohedral crystals of Calcite measuring up to 9 mm scattered all over the underlying matrix. I love the fact that most of the Calcites are well-isolated, allowing them to be viewed from all sides. Very minimal damage, and very attractive in person. A must have for any fan of old European classics or worldwide Calcites. Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#1010) with an old hand-written label from R. Möckel of Schneeberg. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017).
