Item Description

Sparkly, translucent, intergrown, spherical aggregates of calcite rhombs richly and attractively cover the undulating matrix of this showy and excellent specimen from a most historic mining district (Schemnitz) in Slovakia. The first mining settlement here was founded by Huns in the 3rd century BC! This is a classic, but uncommon form of globular calcite from this ancient locale. Ex Slovakia Museum (label) and Howard Belsky Collections. Remember, this was part of Czechoslovakia and was behind the Iron Curtain when Howard obtained this piece in the 1970s or 80s.
