Calcite (Mined: 1946) (classic locality)

Item Description

A rarely seen cabinet display specimen from the Rovnost Mine in the Czech Republic featuring a rich coverage of vitreous, smoky silvery colored compressed blades measuring up to about 7 mm, almost completely covering the underlying matrix. I have to say that this is the first piece of this specific material that I can remember handling from this locality. The piece was originally in the collection of Museum Regni Bohemiae (National Museum in Prague) and dated as being found in 1946. There is another hand-written label with the piece from an unknown collection, with the number "81" indicating it was found in the 81 Shaft of the mine, and the date 10 (October) 1946 can also be seen on the bottom of the label. Later the piece came to the well-known rarities dealer and Czech/Slovak mineral expert, Josef Vajdak and his personal collection label also accompanies the piece. Joe's label also states that this piece is "very rare from this classic locality". Very little damage, it's in great condition for such an impressive big showy piece of this historic and hard to find material. Valued $950.
