Item Description

A very rarely seen specimen of pink manganese-bearing Calcite from Equity Mine in Creede. Dozens of rather vitreous, trigonal crystals measuring up to 1.0 cm across cover the display side of this cabinet sized specimen. It's the only Calcite we can remember having to offer from the locality, and the beautiful color and composition make it a choice specimen, not just from Creede, but any Colorado locale. Most of the crystals are in perfect condition, and look beautiful up close. The only real damage is around the periphery where the piece was separated from the pocket wall. An excellent Calcite specimen which does show a slight amount of pink-red fluorescence under SW UV light to confirm that it is indeed manganese-bearing. Originally from the collection of Bob & Pam Stewart.
PLEASE NOTE: This specimen comes with a couple labels that refer to it as "Kutnohorite", which is a calcium manganese carbonate mineral, and this piece is a manganese-bearing Calcite, so chemically you can see how this mistake could be made, but the crystals are clearly Calcite.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 14.1.1.1 CO.18; 10,155. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
