Calcite is by no means a rare mineral, but good gems are certainly much less common on the market, especially in a larger stone such as this. It takes a skilled hand to facet Calcite due to the brittle nature of the material, along with the multiple cleavage planes that have to be carefully navigated to prevent a stone from falling apart while it's being cut. With that said, if you're fortunate enough to get your hands on a well-cut Calcite, it's a real treat due to the fact that they can be found in larger stones and they can have a bit of liveliness due to the excellent birefringence and double refraction of the material. This stone is a large, impressive, fine quality, soft pink colored "Cushion Brilliant'" cut gem from an undisclosed locality in Mexico (possibly from Charcas). The stone is nearly eye clean and looks beautiful in person. A significant stone for its size, quality, beautiful color and excellent cutting. The high retail value on this gem is $4841.25.
