Item Description

To the best of my recollection, this is the largest Calcite specimen that we've ever had to offer from this lesser-known limestone / crushed rock quarry in Indiana. The piece is a rather impressive big scalenohedral group of mostly white/cream colored Calcite, though small areas of a pale golden hue can be seen. The upper portion of the larger termination is actually a bit gemmy, though the rest of the group is largely translucent at best. Still, the piece is in good shape, and forgivably the underside is cleaved where it was detached from the pocket wall. A handful of "saddle"-shaped, cream colored Dolomite crystals measuring to about 1.0 cm can be seen on the piece as well for a nice touch. To be fair, Calcite and Dolomite are typically the only minerals seen from this locality, so you've got both your bases covered with this fantastic, large showy specimen from a fairly obscure locality. The piece was collected in 1984 by Dave Dinsmore.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 14.1.1.1 IN.2; 9800 George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
