Item Description

The famous Herja Mine has produced some of the most well-known and high quality mineral specimens from any Romanian mineral locality. This piece is a wonderful small cabinet sized display specimen featuring many, fine quality, sharp, well-formed, compressed rhombohedral crystals of Calcite measuring up to 1.4 cm across which are colored by grey inclusions of the rare sulfosalt Jamesonite. If you look closely, you can see the Calcites have formed semi-"rosette"-esque groups. Small patches of accenting white Quartz make for a great touch. Typically these crystals are much more tightly intergrown, and this piece has good distinctive separation between the crystals. You don't see these anymore on the market, and they will go down as classics from this renowned locality. This specimen comes from the collection of our own Alex Venzke (#148.19), member of the leadership team of the Young Mineral Collectors group, a member of the mindat.org management team, a board member for the national Friends of Mineralogy organization, a board member for the Mineralogical Society of the District of Columbia, and co-founder and current Vice President of the Friends of Mineralogy Virginia Chapter. The piece originally came from the collection of fellow YMC member, Abby Dimalanta.
