Item Description
There have been a wide mix of Calcites found around Freiberg over the years. I have seen a myriad of habits and colors of Calcite from various Freiberg mines. This piece features a stacked group of somewhat prismatic scalenohedral crystals with attractive triangular terminations free of matrix. The outer surface is a dark golden color, but it's nearly white on the interior. The piece is translucent when backlit showing an attractive hue. The Calcites are have a resinous luster with well-defined crystal faces. Very little damage, and complete all the way around. One of the better pieces of Calcite that we've had to offer in the auctions from the famous silver-producing District of Freiberg. Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#9480) with a label from Staatl. Mineralien-Niederlage Freiberg. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017).
